Samsung is making efforts to maintain its position in the market by initiating the development of its 1nm process, with plans to start mass production after 2029.

Currently, Samsung’s foundry division is facing significant challenges, particularly with its 3nm and 2nm processes. Nevertheless, the company remains committed to overcoming these hurdles and regaining its competitive edge.

Earlier reports indicated that the development of the 1.4nm process was in its initial stages, focusing on improving yields and reducing costs. A recent report now reveals that Samsung has begun working on its 1nm process, with mass production expected to commence after 2029 if the plans come to fruition.

According to the Q4 2024 report, the gap in market share between TSMC, the largest semiconductor foundry, and Samsung, the second-largest, has expanded. To address this disparity and stay competitive, Samsung is intensifying its efforts to enhance yield rates.

A report from the Korean outlet Seadaily states that the Samsung Semiconductor Research Institute has initiated the development of its advanced 1nm process, often referred to as the “dream semiconductor process.”

It is reported that the company has reassigned several researchers who contributed to the development of the 2nm process to a project team focused on the future 1nm process. The outcome of this endeavor will be closely watched, and it remains to be seen whether Samsung will ultimately surpass TSMC in the semiconductor market.
