Google Enhances Gemini’s Chatbot with Conversation Recall Feature
Google is introducing a new feature to its Gemini chatbot, allowing it to recall past conversations. This update aims to provide more useful responses and make interactions with Gemini more efficient. With the new feature, Gemini will no longer require users to start from scratch or search for previous conversation threads. Instead, it will build on top of existing conversations or projects, providing a more personalized experience.
How Gemini’s Conversation Recall Feature Works
Google explains that Gemini may indicate when it has referenced a past conversation to formulate a response. If this feature makes users uncomfortable, they can easily review, delete, or decide how long Gemini retains their chat history. Additionally, users can disable this feature altogether from the My Activity panel.
Comparison with Other Chatbots
Gemini is not the first chatbot to include a memory feature. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, for instance, will "remember" things about users in certain contexts. A recent example involved answering a question about Jeff Buckley’s vocal range, after which the chatbot asked if the user was a fan of his music. When the user confirmed, a notification appeared stating "memory updated."
