This generation’s iconic TV detective has arrived, and we’re thoroughly enthralled by Charlie Cale, the protagonist of the exceptional Peacock series Poker Face, created by the visionary minds of Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne. Lyonne brings Charlie to life, a character who, on the surface, appears to be a very cool and intriguing individual, but with a remarkable twist: she possesses a superhuman ability to detect lies, a fact confirmed by Johnson himself.
In the first season, Charlie solved a string of murders in a manner reminiscent of her illustrious predecessors, and now, in the second season, she’s back on the road, navigating a new series of intricate cases. The forthcoming season promises to be just as captivating, with an array of bizarre locations and a plethora of renowned guest stars, including multiple characters played by the talented Cynthia Erivo, recently nominated for an Oscar for her role in Wicked. Here’s your first glimpse into the second season of Poker Face, set to premiere on May 8.
Rather than elaborating further on the awesomeness of this upcoming season, let’s allow Johnson and Lyonne to share their insights.
“Charlie Cale is once again on the run, and in season two, we’ve elevated her journey to new heights, one murder mystery at a time,” the duo stated. “From the world of minor league baseball to the realm of big box retail, from funeral homes to alligator farms, and even a grade school talent show, Charlie navigates her crime-solving existential road-trip with her signature deadpan wit, profound human empathy, and her extraordinary lie-detecting ability.”
“To bring season two to life, we drew visual inspiration from the iconic American cinema of the 1970s, paying homage to the works of Robert Altman, Bob Rafelson, and Peter Bogdanovich,” they continued. “However, the backbone of this show is rooted in television—the kind of TV we grew up watching, with episodic, case-of-the-week gems like Columbo, The Rockford Files, and Quantum Leap. Each episode is a self-contained mini movie, existing in its own unique world with a distinct tone and vibe, featuring an eccentric cast of characters played by an incredible array of guest stars. We’re still in awe of the fact that we had the opportunity to work with exceptional talents like Cynthia Erivo, Katie Holmes, John Mulaney, and Awkwafina, among many others, who all immersed themselves in the game with enthusiasm and a willingness to play.”
“Twelve thrilling new episodes are on the horizon. Buckle up and join us on this journey!”
We couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure. You can currently stream season one of Poker Face on Peacock.
