Introduction to Loss of Pulse Detection

Today, Google has obtained clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its innovative Loss of Pulse Detection feature, which will initially be available on the Pixel Watch 3. This groundbreaking feature is capable of detecting when an individual experiences a loss of pulse, which could be due to primary cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory failure, overdose, or poisoning. In such instances, if the user is unresponsive, the feature automatically prompts a call to emergency services, potentially providing life-saving care.

Availability and Rollout

The Loss of Pulse Detection feature was initially announced in 2024 for the Pixel Watch 3 in the European Union. Currently, this feature is available in 14 countries, and Google plans to commence its rollout in the U.S. by the end of March.

Over the past three years, the Pixel Watch has been providing users with peace of mind through its array of safety and health features. These include Car Crash Detection, Fall Detection, Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications and the ECG app, and Safety Check. The introduction of Loss of Pulse Detection significantly enhances these potentially life-saving tools, offering users an expanded suite of protective features.

Important Considerations

It’s noteworthy that the registrant for this feature is Fitbit LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Google.
Primary cardiac arrest typically results from a heart-related issue, such as arrhythmia or heart failure.
Loss of Pulse Detection is not designed to detect every instance of pulse loss and is not intended for individuals with preexisting heart conditions or those requiring cardiac monitoring. It neither diagnoses nor treats medical conditions and does not provide follow-up care. Furthermore, the functionality of emergency calling is contingent upon factors like the device being charged and having sufficient cellular connectivity. This feature is not available in all countries or regions.
