Google’s Latest Pixel Feature Drop Brings AI-Driven Updates

The latest Pixel feature drop has arrived, with Google rolling out updates across its range of smartphones and wearables. For Pixel 9 owners in the US, a new version of Pixel Studio is being introduced, allowing users to create stickers and images of people. Pixel Studio, an AI image app exclusive to Pixel devices, enables users to generate images by simply typing a description of a person or scene, or selecting a desired style. Google’s approach is similar to Apple’s Image Playground. However, photorealistic images are not available to prevent potential misuse.

Beyond Pixel Studio, Google is introducing other AI features to the Pixel family in the US and beyond. Notably, the company’s live scam protection is expanding to more devices, with enhanced functionality for Pixel 9 handsets in the US. The feature, which was initially brought to testers last fall, will now screen English calls to protect users from scams. Additionally, scam text detection is being expanded to Pixel 6 and newer devices in the US, Canada, and the UK.

International Availability and Additional Features

Pixel 9 and Pixel 8 Pro users in Japan can look forward to a broader range of AI features, including Pixel Screenshots and Pixel Studio. Similarly, Google is making these features available to Pixel 9 users in Germany. Furthermore, the company is updating its Find My Device app to allow users to share locations with friends and family, ensuring their safety.

New Features for Pixel Watch Users

Google hasn’t forgotten about Pixel Watch users, particularly those with the latest model. The company has obtained FDA clearance for its Loss of Pulse Detection feature, which can detect when a user has experienced a loss of pulse. In such cases, the Pixel Watch 3 will automatically call emergency services if the user is unresponsive.

Additionally, Google is introducing on-device menstrual tracking to the Pixel Watch 3. The entire Pixel Watch family will also start tracking steps with greater precision and accuracy, thanks to an improved algorithm that recognizes when users deviate from their usual walking pattern. This update ensures that steps are accurately counted and provides reliable insights into daily activities.

The March Pixel drop is starting to roll out today, although it may take a few days for the update to become available on all devices.
