Opera, a leading browser company, has introduced a new AI-powered agent known as Browser Operator, which is capable of performing tasks on various websites on behalf of the user.
A demonstration video released by the company showcases the AI agent’s ability to find a suitable pair of socks on Walmart, purchase tickets for a football match from the official team website, and book a flight and hotel on Booking.com. According to Opera, this feature will be made available to users through its Feature Drop program in the near future.
However, it is unclear whether the agent can operate on individual websites or comprehend and execute more complex queries, such as “Find the cheapest ticket from London to New York for tomorrow” and search across multiple sites.
Notably, Opera already offers AI-powered features that enable users to ask questions about the webpage they are currently browsing.
Opera stated that users have visibility into the actions being performed by Browser Operator and can take control of the screen at any point. The company also claimed that its agent is more secure than competing offerings because it operates natively on the device, rather than relying on a cloud-based browser instance or virtual machine.
The market for AI-powered browser agents is highly competitive, with OpenAI’s Operator, which utilizes a browser and is available to ChatGPT Pro users, being a notable example. Additionally, The Browser Company, developer of the Arc Browser, has teased the launch of a new browser called Dia, which will feature agentic capabilities, and Perplexity is preparing to launch its own browser, called Comet.
