Introduction to ChatGPT Go Plan
OpenAI has announced that it will be offering its ChatGPT Go plan for free to users in India for a period of one year, provided they sign up during the promotional period that commenced on November 4. This move is part of the company’s strategy to expand its presence in one of its key markets.
Details of the Promotion
The announcement was made on Tuesday, although the company did not specify the duration for which the promotional offer would be available. Additionally, existing subscribers to the ChatGPT Go plan in India will also be eligible to avail the free 12-month plan, as stated by the company.
Features of ChatGPT Go
ChatGPT Go, which was launched in India in August, is priced at less than $5 per month, making it the most affordable paid subscription plan offered by OpenAI. The plan subsequently expanded to Indonesia and, more recently, to 16 additional countries across Asia. Some of the key features of ChatGPT Go include 10 times more usage than the free version for generating responses, creating images, and uploading files, as well as improved memory for more personalized responses.
Importance of the Indian Market
India, with its large population of over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet subscribers, is a crucial market for OpenAI. The company has already established its New Delhi office and is in the process of building a local team to further expand its presence in the country. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that India is the company’s second-largest market after the U.S., albeit with challenges in generating revenue from paid plans.
Competitor Activity
OpenAI’s competitors, including Perplexity and Google, are also eyeing the Indian market, with its large and youthful user base. Perplexity has partnered with Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to the telecom operator’s 360 million subscribers, while Google has introduced a free one-year AI Pro plan for students in India.
Upcoming Developer Conference
OpenAI is scheduled to host its DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where it is expected to make announcements specific to the Indian market, targeting local developers and enterprises. India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT, with millions of users engaging with the chatbot on a daily basis.
