Fiction writers, beware: OpenAI may be setting its sights on your territory.

On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X to announce that the company has developed a “new model” that excels at creative writing. He shared an extensive sample from the model, which was given the prompt “Please write a metafictional literary short story about AI and grief.”

Altman expressed his admiration for the model’s work, stating, “Not sure yet how/when [this model] will get released,” and adding, “[but] this is the first time I have been really struck by something written by AI; it got the vibe of metafiction so right.”

OpenAI’s foray into fiction writing marks a departure from its usual focus on more structured and predictable fields like mathematics and programming. The fact that the company is exploring this area suggests that its latest models may have made significant strides in writing capabilities. Historically, AI has struggled to produce high-quality fiction, as evidenced by its limited success as an essayist.
