OpenAI has announced the release of its GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini AI models on ChatGPT, as revealed in a recent post on X on Wednesday.

According to OpenAI spokesperson Shaokyi Amdo, the GPT-4.1 models are expected to be particularly beneficial for software engineers utilizing ChatGPT for coding or debugging purposes. OpenAI claims that GPT-4.1 outperforms GPT-4o in terms of coding capabilities and instruction following, while also being faster than its o-series reasoning models.

The company is currently rolling out GPT-4.1 to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team. Additionally, OpenAI is making GPT-4.1 mini available to both free and paid users of ChatGPT. As a consequence of this update, OpenAI will be removing GPT-4.0 mini from ChatGPT for all users, as noted in the release notes for GPT-4.1.

In April, OpenAI initially introduced GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini, but the models were only accessible through the company’s developer-facing API. At that time, OpenAI faced criticism from the AI research community for releasing GPT-4.1 without a safety report, with some researchers arguing that the company was compromising its standards for transparency regarding its AI models. OpenAI responded by stating that GPT-4.1, despite its improved performance and speed compared to GPT-4o, was not a frontier model and therefore did not require the same level of safety reporting.

Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s Head of Safety Systems, explained on X that “GPT-4.1 doesn’t introduce new modalities or ways of interacting with the model, and doesn’t surpass o3 in intelligence.” Heidecke added, “This means that the safety considerations here, while substantial, are different from those of frontier models.”

OpenAI is now releasing more information about GPT-4.1 and its other AI models. Earlier on Wednesday, the company committed to publishing the results of its internal AI model safety evaluations more frequently in an effort to increase transparency. These results will be made available on OpenAI’s new Safety Evaluations Hub, which was launched on Wednesday.

The release of GPT-4.1 in ChatGPT comes at a time when AI coding tools are gaining increased attention. OpenAI is reportedly close to announcing its $3 billion acquisition of Windsurf, a popular AI coding tool. Earlier on Wednesday, Google updated its Gemini chatbot to more easily connect to GitHub projects.
