The release of preorders for the newly unveiled Nintendo Switch 2 in the United States is being postponed by Nintendo due to concerns about the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Initially scheduled to start on April 9, preorders will now be delayed.
According to a statement from a Nintendo spokesperson to TechCrunch, “Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not commence on April 9, 2025, as previously planned, in order to evaluate the potential effects of tariffs and the evolving market conditions. An update on the timing will be provided at a later date, while the launch date remains unchanged at June 5, 2025.”
Despite the delay in preorders, Nintendo still intends to launch the console on June 5, with a price tag of $450.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was officially announced by the company on Tuesday, marking its first new console release since the introduction of the Nintendo Switch in 2017. The console will be available for purchase as a standalone device or as part of a bundle that includes Mario Kart World, a new game designed for the Switch 2.
Notably, the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 coincided with President Trump’s announcement of comprehensive tariffs, which are anticipated to have a significant impact on the tech industry. The imposed tariffs of approximately 30% on China and Taiwan are likely to disrupt trade flows in the tech world, prompting Nintendo’s cautious approach to preorders.
