The popular Night at the Museum film series is set to be revived at 20th Century Studios under the Disney umbrella, with plans to explore more historical adventures. It has been two decades since the release of the first film, which starred Ben Stiller as a night watchman at a museum where the exhibits come to life after dark. The franchise has since spawned several sequels, featuring notable stars such as Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Rami Malek, and Dan Stevens as legendary figures.

According to Deadline, the reboot will be produced by Dan Levine and Shawn Levy of 21 Laps, who previously worked on the original franchise. Writer Tripper Clancy, known for Die Hart, has been tapped to write the script for the reboot. While it is unclear if Levy will return to direct, it has been confirmed that the new film will take place in a different museum with new characters. The possibility of Ben Stiller returning as a director instead of a star would be an exciting development.

The connection to Disney is noteworthy, as the company had previously explored a similar concept, Magic Kingdom, with Jon Favreau. This concept involved Disney Parks as the setting, where ride characters would come to life after dark. Now, with both universes under the Disney umbrella, it is possible that the Disneyland version of the concept could be developed into an official spin-off of the Night at the Museum reboot.

One potential direction for the reboot could involve the use of animatronics, given the Imagineering arm of the parks industry’s experience in creating historical figures as animatronics. For instance, an animatronic based on Walt Disney himself is set to be introduced at Disneyland’s 70th birthday celebration. Perhaps the museum exhibits in the reboot could feature animatronics that come to life, adding a sci-fi twist to the story. This approach would be a bold and intriguing twist, making the potential return of Ben Stiller as director even more appealing.
