Introduction to AI Literacy Day
In recognition of National AI Literacy Day, we are excited to share the latest initiatives aimed at empowering parents, educators, and students with the skills and resources necessary to utilize AI in a safe and effective manner.
- AI Training for Educators and Guardians: We have developed two new courses for educators in K12 and higher education that focus on leveraging Google AI to save time, create engaging learning experiences, and foster innovative ideas. These courses complement our existing resources, including the Grow with Google Generative AI for Educators course created in partnership with MIT RAISE, the updated Guardian’s Guide to AI, and the Experience AI program for educators and students.
- Resources for Navigating AI: A new lesson plan is available to support teachers in educating their students on responsible AI use. Grounded in our five essentials for getting started with AI, this curriculum incorporates real-world scenarios and practical tips. For families, we have created a conversation guide to facilitate exploration of AI together. These resources are valuable additions to programs like Be Internet Awesome and the Online Safety Roadshow, which have helped millions of children learn to safely and confidently navigate the online world.
- Expanding Gemini Access with Supervision Tools: Following feedback from parents, teachers, and child development experts on the potential of AI as a learning and creativity tool with proper supervision, we are expanding Gemini to younger users. Parents will be able to manage their child’s access to Gemini through the Family Link app on supervised accounts. School administrators can manage access to Gemini in the Google Admin console, now as a core service, soon to include younger students’ accounts.
- Guidance on AI-Generated Content: A video is available that instructs viewers on identifying and interpreting labels required by YouTube for content that has been significantly altered or synthetically generated using generative AI, found at this link.
- Funding for AI Skills Expansion: Google.org has allocated $1 million to the MIT RAISE Initiative to advance AI education and computational skills. This effort builds on Google’s Generative AI for Educators course with MIT RAISE, bringing Google.org’s total AI literacy funding to over $40 million, including the AI Opportunity Fund for educators and students. Over the past two years, these grants have enabled us to reach more than 13 million students, striving towards a future where AI enhances learning, growth, and opportunity for all.
