Introduction to Never’s End
There’s a new tactical RPG on the horizon, and it’s a promising one. Never’s End boasts a retro aesthetic that is sure to delight fans of classic titles like Final Fantasy Tactics, and its development team has an impressive background. Character design is being handled by Masayoshi Nishimura, known for his work on Octopath Traveler, while the soundtrack has been composed by rapper and multi-instrumentalist Doseone, who previously worked on the music for Enter the Gungeon.
Game Development and Inspirations
The game is being developed by indie studio Hypersect, which previously created the innovative puzzler Inversus. According to founder Ryan Juckett, the team aims to create a game that goes beyond being a clone of Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics. Instead, Never’s End draws inspiration from the open-world gameplay of titles like Divinity: Original Sin 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Gameplay Features
The game features an open world, allowing players to tackle turn-based battles in creative and innovative ways. The battle grids can be transformed using elemental magic, enabling players to drain rivers, melt the ground to create lava, or freeze and set enemies aflame. As the company promises, "every battleground is unique, challenging you to find new ways to use magic and shift the odds in your favor."
Customization and Community Building
Customization plays a significant role in Never’s End. Players can upgrade towns, temples, and other locations to establish businesses, trade routes, and recruit new companions. As the story progresses, these locations will attract a growing community of characters, including weaponsmiths, tavern keepers, and logging camps. Characters can also team up to unleash "tactical synergies." The game’s trailer showcases the game’s features and gameplay.
Release Details
Never’s End is set to be released in late 2025 for PlayStation consoles and PC via Steam. Although the price has not been announced, the game is already available for wishlist on Steam. With its unique blend of retro aesthetics and innovative gameplay mechanics, Never’s End is definitely a game to look out for in the coming year.
