Preparations are underway for a rare all-woman spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS), with two astronauts set to perform orbital maintenance work.

NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers are scheduled to embark on their spacewalk on Thursday at 8 a.m. ET, with a planned duration of six hours and 35 minutes outside the space station. The event will be broadcast live on NASA+ and the agency’s YouTube channel, and can also be viewed through the live feed below.

During the spacewalk, the astronauts will focus on relocating a communications antenna on the space station and installing a mounting bracket in preparation for the upcoming installation of an additional set of ISS Rollout Solar Arrays (IROSA). The IROSA arrays are designed to increase the power generation capability of the ISS by up to 30%, boosting the total available power from 160 kilowatts to up to 215 kilowatts, according to NASA. Additionally, the pair will work on upgrading the station’s power systems while tethered to the ISS.

To date, there have been five all-women spacewalks conducted outside the ISS. The first historic event took place nearly six years ago, following several delays caused by a poorly fitting spacesuit. On October 18, 2019, NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir made history by stepping outside the ISS for a spacewalk, cementing the role of women in spaceflight. Earlier this year, NASA astronaut Suni Williams broke the women’s record for total spacewalking time after completing a 5.5-hour spacewalk outside the ISS, bringing her total spacewalking time to 62 hours and six minutes.

Thursday’s spacewalk will mark the first time astronaut Ayers has engaged in extravehicular activity outside the ISS, while McClain will be undertaking her third spacewalk.
