There is a dedicated group of enthusiasts who are fascinated by Greek mythology and think about the gods and goddesses on a daily basis. With the recent news that Christopher Nolan, known for his work on Interstellar, is set to bring The Odyssey to the big screen with an epic cast, this group is eagerly anticipating the release. In recent years, there have been various adaptations of Greek myths, ranging from Netflix’s Kaos, which starred Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, to Rachel Smythe’s Lore Olympus and the Hades video games, which have offered fresh perspectives on classic stories.

Many of these adaptations have revisited the original texts and reinterpreted them, often with a focus on female characters and their agency. For example, the story of Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld, has been reimagined with her having more control over her fate. This trend of reexamining the myths and presenting alternative versions has led to a renewed interest in the stories of ancient Greece. With the upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, fans are hoping to see more of these fresh takes on classic tales.

Hades and Persephone

The story of Hades and Persephone has gained significant attention in recent years, particularly in the young adult romantic literature genre. Rachel Smythe’s Lore Olympus has been a huge success, both in digital downloads and physical print, thanks to its beautifully illustrated comic that retells the couple’s courtship from Persephone’s perspective. The gaming community has also fallen in love with the story, with the Hades video game series featuring the couple’s children, Zagreus and Melinoe, as main characters.

Both Lore Olympus and the Hades games draw from lesser-known texts that offer alternative interpretations of the myth, presenting a more empowered Persephone who chooses her fate willingly. Fans are eager to see this version of the story come to life on screen, with a live-action adaptation of Lore Olympus currently in the works. The Jim Henson Company is set to produce an animated adaptation, and a live-action movie is also highly anticipated.

Orpheus and Eurydice

The tragic story of Orpheus and Eurydice has been reimagined in various adaptations, including Netflix’s Kaos. However, the original myth’s themes of survival, division, and sacrifice continue to resonate with audiences. The stage musical Hadestown, which premiered on Broadway, offers a timely retelling of the myth, and fans are hoping it will be adapted into a movie. The musical’s original cast, including Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada, are set to reprise their roles in an upcoming West End production, which will be filmed.

A post-apocalyptic, gender-bent take on the myth, titled Odessa, is also in the works, starring Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink. With its themes of love, loss, and sacrifice, the story of Orpheus and Eurydice continues to captivate audiences, and fans are eager to see it brought to life on the big screen.

Hercules

Disney’s live-action adaptation of Hercules is currently in the works, with director Guy Ritchie at the helm. However, fans are hoping that the studio will reconsider and opt for a different director, such as Jon M. Chu, who has experience with musical adaptations like Wicked. With Ariana Grande rumored to play Megara, fans are eager to see the musical brought to life on the big screen, complete with a talented cast of Black actresses and singers as the muses.

Rather than focusing on the traditional story of Hercules and his 10 tasks, fans are hoping to see a more nuanced exploration of the character, drawing from the Disney classic’s songs and themes. With the right creative team in place, the story of Hercules could be expanded and reimagined for a new generation of audiences.

Eros and Psyche

The Greek myth of Eros and Psyche has been a timeless tale of love and beauty, inspiring countless adaptations and reinterpretations. The story, which tells the tale of a beautiful girl sent to care for a monster who turns out to be a god, has been reimagined in various forms of media, including Lore Olympus. Fans are eager to see this myth retold as a core love story, with a focus on Psyche’s heroism and agency. A new series, perhaps in the style of Bridgerton, could bring this ancient tale to life in a fresh and exciting way.

Medusa

Medusa, the snake-haired goddess, has often been relegated to the role of villain or side character in adaptations. However, fans are calling for justice and a more nuanced portrayal of this complex character. With her story having been reimagined in Kaos and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Medusa is due for a major retelling, one that presents her as a powerful figure who can challenge the patriarchy. A Wicked-style adaptation, which reimagines the classic story from the villain’s perspective, could be the perfect way to bring Medusa’s tale to life.
