On Monday morning, thousands of users, including many in the United States, were unable to access Elon Musk’s X platform. After approximately eight hours of downtime, Musk announced that the platform was experiencing a “massive cyberattack.”

Musk wrote on X, “There was (and still is) a massive cyberattack against ๐•. We are attacked daily, but this one was carried out with significant resources. It appears to be the work of a large, coordinated group and/or a nation-state. We are tracing the source…”

In a live interview with Fox News on Monday, Musk stated that the alleged cyberattack on X appeared to originate from IP addresses in the Ukraine region.

While there is no concrete evidence to support Musk’s claims beyond his statement, it is plausible that his platform would be vulnerable to cyberattacks. Under President Donald Trump’s second administration, Musk has become increasingly prominent and controversial, having led his team, “DOGE,” through widespread cuts to government funding, jobs, and international aid programs.

Additionally, Tesla stores have been the site of protests over Musk’s significant, unelected role in the government. Furthermore, the stock of Musk’s car company has also experienced a decline.

According to Downdetector, a website that tracks user reports of online outages, X was inaccessible to some users around 5:30 a.m. ET, with over 20,000 users reporting outages. Although the issues seemed to have resolved after about an hour, they recurred around 9:30 a.m. ET, with more than 40,000 users reporting problems. Despite intermittent access for some users, the issues persisted past 1:30 PM ET.

While occasional outages are normal for platforms of this size, they can be inconvenient for users. As one user expressed in the comments on Downdetector, “On the first day of NFL free agency?! ELON, fix this.”
