X, the platform, experienced significant downtime on Monday, much like the highly unlikely cage fight between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg that’s never, ever happening. According to Down Detector, there was a surge in outage reports from users between approximately 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM ET, followed by two more prolonged spikes indicating more substantial outages later in the morning. The Engadget team was unable to access tweets on X for the most part, except for a few brief moments when the service was operational.

Elon Musk, the platform’s owner, attributed the issues to a “massive cyberattack against X” allegedly carried out by either a “large, coordinated group and/or a country”. Although Musk did not provide any evidence to support his claims, experts speaking to NBC News found his assertions to be plausible.

According to Isik Mater, director of research at NetBlocks, which tracks global internet connectivity, “It’s difficult to be certain, but given the pattern of three observed outages, a denial service attack targeting X’s infrastructure can’t be ruled out. It’s certainly one of the longest X/Twitter outages in our records.”

This is not the first instance where Musk has blamed a major attack for X’s technical issues. He made a similar claim last year when a livestreamed audio chat with President Donald Trump experienced technical difficulties.
