X Social Media Platform Suffers Outages, Elon Musk Blames Cyberattack

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, experienced widespread outages on Monday. Elon Musk, the platform’s owner, has attributed the outages to a "major cyberattack." However, Musk did not provide any evidence to support his claim.

Musk took to X to announce the alleged cyberattack, stating, "There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing …" Musk’s statement appears to be speculative, and it is essential to note that he has a history of making false claims on various topics.

Later in the day, Musk suggested on Fox Business that Ukraine might be behind the outage, although he again failed to provide any evidence for his assertion. X has experienced several small outages since Musk acquired the platform in October 2022, but Monday’s outage was particularly severe. Interestingly, there seem to be significant regional differences in who can access X, with some users experiencing intermittent outages while others cannot access the platform at all.

Potential Suspects Behind the Outage

If X is indeed under a DDoS attack, there are numerous potential suspects. Musk has alienated many individuals and groups in recent months, including those who oppose his support for former President Donald Trump. Musk’s actions, such as making Nazi-style salutes and dismantling federal agencies, have also drawn criticism. Additionally, his attempts to access sensitive government data have raised concerns.

Musk’s History of Deception

It is crucial to remember that Musk has a long history of lying about various topics. For instance, he falsely claimed that Tesla had no employees when he joined the company. Musk has also tried to take credit for founding Tesla, which is not true. Given his track record of deception, it is difficult to take Musk’s claims about the cyberattack at face value.

Protests Against Musk and Tesla

Musk and Tesla have faced sustained protests in recent weeks at dealerships across the country. Rather than acknowledging that people may genuinely dislike his actions, Musk is attempting to shift the blame to wealthy liberals like George Soros. Musk claimed that an investigation found five ActBlue-funded groups responsible for the protests, but ActBlue is simply a payments processor.

Musk’s Misinformation

Musk’s claims about ActBlue and its funders are also misleading. He listed individuals such as George Soros, Reid Hoffman, and Herbert Sandler as ActBlue funders, but failed to note that Herbert Sandler passed away in 2019 and Patricia Bauman passed away in 2024. George Soros is also no longer actively involved in public life due to his age. Musk’s attempts to blame dead people for the outrage against him are unsubstantiated and lack credibility.
