We envision an assistant that is tailored to your needs and aware of your surroundings. It should seamlessly interact with the apps and services you already utilize, enhancing your productivity, creativity, and curiosity.
When we introduced Google Assistant in 2016, advancements in natural language processing and voice recognition technology enabled a more intuitive way to access Google’s assistance. Nearly a decade later, we are witnessing another significant platform shift, with generative AI revolutionizing the way we interact with technology.
To further develop the world’s most helpful assistant, we have reimagined the experience with AI at its core, introducing Gemini as your personal, AI-powered assistant. Although our expectations for an assistant’s capabilities are rapidly evolving, our mission remains unchanged.
What’s Next for Google Assistant
Millions of users have already transitioned from Google Assistant to Gemini, sharing their positive experiences with the new AI-powered features in their daily lives. We would like to update you on our plans to make this enhanced experience accessible to as many people as possible.
In the coming months, we will be upgrading more mobile device users from Google Assistant to Gemini. Later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices or accessible for new downloads on mobile app stores.
Additionally, we will be upgrading tablets, cars, and devices connected to your phone, such as headphones and watches, to Gemini. We are also introducing a new experience, powered by Gemini, to home devices like speakers, displays, and TVs. We look forward to sharing more details with you in the next few months. Until then, Google Assistant will continue to operate on these devices.
What’s Next for Gemini
Since its launch last year, we have expanded access to the Gemini app, making it available in over 40 languages and more than 200 countries. Meanwhile, we are focusing on improving the quality of the day-to-day Gemini experience, particularly for those who have come to rely on Google Assistant. We have updated the app to support more of the most requested features, such as playing music, setting timers, or taking action from your lock screen.
However, Gemini’s capabilities extend far beyond Google Assistant, offering an entirely new kind of assistance. Features like Gemini Live for free-flowing, multimodal conversations and Deep Research, which transforms Gemini into a personal research assistant, are only possible with AI — and we are just getting started.
