Expansion of FarmBeats for Students Program to All 50 States Aims to Foster Next Generation of Farmers
REDMOND, Wash. — May 6, 2025 — Microsoft Corporation and the National FFA Organization have announced the nationwide expansion of the FarmBeats for Students program, an innovative educational initiative that combines smart sensors, data science, and artificial intelligence (AI) to teach precision agriculture in classrooms. As of today, FFA teachers and students across the United States, including those in 185 middle and high schools, will receive a complimentary classroom set of FarmBeats for Students kits. These kits include ready-to-use sensor systems and accompanying curriculum for teachers, designed to be accessible to classrooms of all types, with no prior technical experience required.
The increasing adoption of advanced technology in farming, such as automation of tractors and harvesters, the use of drones, and data analysis for early intervention against pests and diseases, is transforming the industry. By providing hands-on experience with machine automation, data science, and AI, American agricultural students will be better equipped to remain competitive in the global market.
Utilizing the FarmBeats for Students kits and complimentary curriculum, students will construct environmental sensor systems and leverage AI to monitor soil moisture and detect nutrient deficiencies. This enables them to gain insights into plant health and make data-driven decisions in real-time. The kit can be adapted to address regional challenges, such as drought, frost, and pests, allowing students to acquire practical experience in tackling real-world issues in their local communities.
“Microsoft is dedicated to ensuring that students and teachers have access to the necessary tools to succeed in today’s technology-driven world, including hands-on experience with precision farming, data science, and AI,” stated Mary Snapp, Microsoft Vice President of Strategic Initiatives. “By collaborating with the FFA to bring FarmBeats for Students to students across the country, we aim to inspire the next generation of agricultural leaders and equip them with the skills to address any challenges they may face in the future.”
“Our partnership with Microsoft demonstrates the power of collaboration in addressing industry needs while promoting personal and professional growth among students,” said Christine White, Chief Program Officer of the National FFA Organization. “Supporting agricultural education and leadership development is essential for shaping the next generation of innovators and problem solvers. Programs like this provide students with technical knowledge, confidence, and adaptability, enabling them to thrive in diverse and evolving industries. Investing in these young minds today will pave the way for a more sustainable, innovative, and resilient agricultural future.”
Additionally, teachers, students, or parents interested in FarmBeats for Students can purchase a kit for $35 at this link and receive complimentary training at Microsoft Learn.
Any educator interested in implementing the FarmBeats for Students program can now access a new, comprehensive, and free course on the Microsoft Educator Learn Center, providing training on precision agriculture, data science, and AI.
