As enthusiasts of Disney eagerly anticipate the unveiling of Walt Disney’s cutting-edge robot this summer, in celebration of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, an innovative, interactive Mickey Mouse popcorn bucket has been introduced, capable of blinking and engaging in conversation as you enjoy your snacks from its head.

io9 had the opportunity to experience the latest development in the popcorn bucket innovation race, a phenomenon that originated at Disney theme parks and has since become a highly sought-after souvenir in movie theaters. While AMC Theaters’ Dune sandworm popcorn bucket appeared to be the pinnacle of unconventional and extravagant snack containers, Disney has now surpassed this with a robotic upgrade. Witness the bucket’s moving and blinking features, as well as its ability to initiate fun conversations with a simple “Hey Mickey?” prompt.

Although it is pre-programmed with a selection of phrases, the true delight lies in the bucket’s moving head and blinking eyes, which are both astounding and slightly unsettling, yet undeniably charming. The interactive feature, which responds to voice commands when prompted with the magic question, is particularly impressive, albeit still in need of refinement. During the demo, the bucket surprisingly ignored my voice, even when I spoke loudly, but somehow responded to its companion cast member, suggesting that perhaps a softer tone or a deeper voice, reminiscent of Gaston, might be more effective in initiating a response from the robot Mickey Mouse.

While it is unlikely that movie theaters will incorporate voice-activated features into their popcorn buckets, unless perhaps for a movie like M3GAN, this interactive Mickey Mouse bucket is a wonderfully eccentric addition to the popcorn bucket hall of fame. As we look to the future, it will be exciting to see what innovative features popcorn buckets will have by the time Disneyland celebrates its 80th anniversary.
