Meta recently made headlines by announcing plans to cut approximately 5% of its workforce, with some employees being laid off due to performance issues. Despite these job cuts, the company is still expanding its presence in certain regions. Meta has faced controversy over its layoff approach.

The company is establishing a new site in Bengaluru, India’s tech hub, as announced by multiple Meta employees on LinkedIn. This expansion is part of Meta’s efforts to grow its presence in the region.

Currently, Meta is hiring for 41 positions in Bengaluru, according to its careers webpage. Most of these job postings were added over the last month, with positions ranging from software engineering to machine learning engineering and chip design for Meta’s data centers.

One of Meta’s job ads, posted on LinkedIn three weeks ago, is seeking an experienced Engineering Director to lead its engineering team in India. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing a strategy to hire and build founding engineering teams and creating a vision for engineer teams in the country.

The new center in Bengaluru is part of Meta’s Enterprise Engineering team, which focuses on developing custom internal tools for the company, rather than its well-known products like Facebook and Instagram. This team’s work is crucial to Meta’s operations, and the new site will play a key role in supporting these efforts.

While Meta has existing offices in India, including Hyderabad, Gurgaon, New Delhi, and Mumbai, the Bengaluru site is unique in its focus on engineering roles. Most of the job openings at the other locations are for non-engineering positions, with only one engineering-related position available out of 12 openings.

A Meta spokesperson in India confirmed that the company is recruiting for a small number of engineering positions in Bengaluru, stating that it “regularly updates its location strategies to support long-term investments.”

Although the 41 positions in Bengaluru represent a small proportion of Meta’s global job postings, which total over 1,700, they mark a significant shift for the company. Historically, Meta has not used India as a primary hub for engineering roles, instead focusing on North America and Europe.

In a notable example from 2022, an Indian software engineer made headlines after being laid off by Meta just two days after relocating to Canada for the job. This incident highlights the challenges faced by employees in the tech industry.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that the company intends to backfill the jobs it cut during its most recent round of layoffs, and the new hires in Bengaluru are part of this effort. As Meta continues to evolve and adapt to the changing tech landscape, its expansion in India is a significant step forward.
