Breaking Records with Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday five-and-a-half-hour chair livestream has achieved a remarkable feat by breaking records for a cross-platform livestream.

This past Wednesday, Marvel demonstrated its ability to command online attention by getting the internet to watch 27 chairs being laid out in a row for over five hours. The scope of the internet’s engagement was substantial, with A lot of the internet tuning in. According to Deadline, the Doomsday cast announcement garnered over 275 million views during its runtime and 3.1 million social media mentions, surpassing the view records set by the first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer. Even 24 hours after the livestream, it remained the #2 trending stream on YouTube, with Marvel’s condensed version of the event on Twitter still attracting significant attention.

Given the current general malaise surrounding Marvel’s output, including the post-Endgame pivot to Disney+ and the mixed reviews for Captain America: Brave New World, this achievement speaks to the studio’s enduring grip on pop culture. Perhaps no other studio could have made people watch chairs for over five hours and still maintain a strong online presence.

Moreover, the Doomsday cast mix, featuring returning Avengers A-Listers, the Fantastic Four, most of the main cast of the upcoming Thunderbolts, some Fox X-Men stars, and MCU mainstays, has left fans speculating about potential future developments, either for Doomsday or the multiversal events of Secret Wars. The studio seems to be hinting at more to come, with Robert Downey Jr. commenting on his Instagram post, "That’s what you call a deep bench of talent…actually it’s more like a row, but an extra long one…that must be it…right?," followed by Marvel Studios’ response: "There’s always room for more…".

The question remains: how long can they keep us engaged with such unconventional marketing strategies?
