Following years of competing at the box office, Marvel and DC Comics are once again joining forces with a new crossover event.
This week, at the ComicsPro retailer expo, the editors-in-chief of Marvel and DC, C.B. Cebulski and Marie Javins, jointly announced the upcoming project, which is expected to be released sometime this year. Although no artwork or creative team was revealed, according to ComicsBeat’s Heidi MacDonald, the event will consist of two one-shots, titled Marvel/DC and DC/Marvel.
Longtime fans of comics will recall that the two major publishers have collaborated in the past. This initially took the form of various one-shots in the 1970s and 80s, featuring matchups such as Spider-Man vs. Superman and the Teen Titans vs. the X-Men. In the late 1990s, DC Versus Marvel and the Amalgam Age comics were released, pitting heroes from each publisher against each other, with readers sometimes voting on the outcome. The Amalgam books combined heroes from both universes, resulting in characters like Dark Claw, a fusion of Wolverine and Batman, and Wonder Woman, a combination of Storm and other characters, in a merged universe known as Earth-9602 for Marvel and Earth-496 for DC, also referred to as Earth-1996 for both.
In 2003, George Pérez and Kurt Busiek teamed up to create JLA/Avengers, a comic that was initially approved in 1979. In this story, the heroes of Marvel and DC worked together to save each other’s worlds, rather than their own, leading to both teams questioning each other’s ability to protect their respective dimensions. All three of these crossover events have been re-released in recent years, possibly to lay the groundwork for this new collaboration.
As more information becomes available, we will provide updates on Marvel/DC and DC/Marvel.
