In today’s world, there’s no shortage of reasons to feel angry. So, why not take a cue from the ’90s and channel that frustration into pummeling bad guys in a loud, over-the-top arcade game? Marvel Cosmic Invasion brings together iconic characters like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine in a beat-’em-up that looks like it was ripped straight from a classic arcade cabinet.

This game bears a striking resemblance to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, and that’s no coincidence. Marvel Cosmic Invasion comes from the same development team, Tribute Games, and publisher, Dotemu. The goal is to recreate the nostalgic feel of side-scrolling ’90s button-mashers like X-Men, The Simpsons, and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with modern touches.

Similar to Shredder’s Revenge, Marvel Cosmic Invasion leverages modern graphical engines to enhance the classic pixel art style without betraying its retro roots. The characters’ visual style draws inspiration from 90s-era Marvel comics.

Players can choose a team of two superheroes and switch between them mid-fight. Initially, the game features Captain America, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Storm, Phyla-Vell, Venom, and Nova. While the developers haven’t revealed future character additions, it’s likely that popular Marvel characters like Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, and Black Widow will join the fray.

The game’s story promises to be as over-the-top as one would expect from a ’90s-inspired Marvel beat-’em-up. The villainous Annihilus has launched a devastating attack across the galaxy, threatening all life, and it’s up to the heroes to join forces and stop him. The adventure will take players from the streets of New York City to the depths of the Negative Zone.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion supports up to four players, both locally and online, with crossplay functionality.

The game is set to release later this year for PC, Switch, PS5, PS4, and Xbox. Although the exact release date and pricing have not been announced, Dotemu has released an announcement trailer, which can be viewed below.
