Mario Kart World is set to launch exclusively with the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. The latest installment in the series was confirmed to be releasing on the same day as the console in the company’s Switch 2 Nintendo Direct, which also revealed a new feature: off-road driving.

This means that Mario Kart World will allow players to “drive virtually everywhere,” including grinding down railings, jumping off walls, and driving off the race track. A new mode called Free Roam will also be available, enabling players to drive around and enjoy the scenery with friends. This feature is sure to be a hit, especially with the opportunity to explore the game’s world with friends.

As suggested by its name, Mario Kart World will feature courses set in regions around a contiguous game world. The game will also provide a more immersive experience, with Nintendo incorporating dynamic time-of-day and weather effects. This will add a new layer of realism to the game, making it feel more engaging and interactive.

In a four-race Grand Prix, players will be required to drive between courses, with their performance during these sections affecting their overall standing in the competition. Additionally, a new mode called Knockout Tour will take players on a journey from one end of the globe to the other, with elimination checkpoints along the way. Players must rank above a certain position, such as eighth, to avoid being kicked out of the race. The competition will be fierce, with 24 drivers participating, up from previous games.

While a new Mario Kart game for the Switch 2 is not entirely unexpected, the official preview on Nintendo’s site and YouTube (below) provides a detailed look at the game’s features.

However, the announcement also confirmed a less exciting detail: the game will retail for $80 when it launches on June 5. Nevertheless, players can save $30 by opting for a bundle that includes the game with the Switch 2 hardware for $500.

Nintendo will reveal more information about Mario Kart World during another Nintendo Direct on April 17.
