Just a few days have passed since the release of the first official trailer for the Lilo & Stitch remake, and the initial impression is that it resembles other remakes of its kind. Apparently, Disney is heavily investing in this project this year, which means it’s time to highlight some key metrics.
According to Disney, the Lilo & Stitch trailer has garnered an impressive 158 million views within a 24-hour timeframe. This achievement positions it as the second-most viewed trailer for the company’s live-action remakes to date, trailing behind the 224.6 million views for the Lion King remake’s teaser trailer. The latter, which was released in November 2018, held the record for the second-biggest trailer debut at the time. Furthermore, Lilo performed exceptionally well on social media platforms, securing the top trending spot on Twitter, YouTube, and China’s Douyin. Disney attributes part of this success to Stitch’s appearance at the Super Bowl in a short teaser, which accumulated 173.1 million views within 24 hours and stands as the studio’s most-viewed digital spot.
Disney is no stranger to boasting about the performance of its trailers, and similarly, we are accustomed to reporting on them. However, it’s somewhat unusual to see the company highlighting Lilo & Stitch’s teaser as the second-most viewed. This also underscores the diminishing impact of these remakes: while Lion King excelled in terms of visual appeal, the views for Lilo do not seem to reflect the same level of enthusiasm. If audiences aren’t drawn to Snow White’s CGI dwarfs, they may not be interested in a CGI alien masquerading as a CGI dog either. As is often the case, the best and worst outcome for this remake might be that it encourages younger generations to watch the original animated version and compare the two.
The Lilo & Stitch remake is set to hit theaters on May 23.
