A film adaptation of the popular Xbox video game franchise Gears of War has been long awaited, and Netflix’s adaptation is finally gaining momentum. The film is based on the Xbox game series, which has been a fan favorite for years.

Director David Leitch, known for his work on The Fall Guy, has been tapped to helm the Netflix film, which will be a blockbuster take on the Gears of War game series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch’s production company 87North will be partnering with the Coalition Studio, the developers of the video game, to bring the movie to life. The script will be written by Dune writer Jon Spaihts.

The Gears of War game series is set in a universe where the planet Sera is on the brink of collapse, and humanity is facing a new threat from the monstrous Locust. The franchise follows Delta Squad, a regiment led by Sergeant Marcus Fenix, as they attempt to clear their names and save humanity from invasion through intense battles and chainsaw-wielding action.

Netflix acquired the rights to adapt the Gears of War games into a franchise in 2022. With Leitch on board, it’s possible that some of his frequent collaborators may join the cast. The film is part of Netflix’s ongoing effort to adapt popular video games into films and series, including Castlevania, Sonic Prime, Resident Evil, and Horizon Zero Dawn.
