The highly anticipated second season of HBO’s The Last of Us is approaching, and a new trailer was unveiled at this weekend’s SXSW event.

Similar to its video game counterpart, The Last of Us Part II, the upcoming season takes place years after the events of the first season. Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) are now part of a community of survivors in Wyoming, attempting to live normal lives. However, their struggles are far from over, as the Infected still pose a threat, and Joel grapples with the guilt of his past choices, including saving Ellie and killing the Fireflies at the end of season one. Meanwhile, Ellie is trying to cope with the feeling that she didn’t play a significant role in finding a cure after all, while also navigating her life as a regular teenage girl.

For those familiar with the game, it’s no secret that the story takes a darker turn from here. Although it’s unclear how much of the sequel’s plot will be covered in this season, key characters like Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), Dina (Isabela Merced), and Jesse (Young Manzino) will be featured. The new trailer offers a glimpse into their stories and hints at the repercussions of Joel’s actions. Even for those who haven’t played the game, the trailer promises an intense and emotional ride, with several moments from the game that will likely have a significant impact.

New episodes of The Last of Us will premiere on HBO starting Sunday, April 13.
