Cultivated chicken dog treats have gone on sale at a U.K. pet food retailer, Pets at Home. The retailer is also a significant investor in Meatly, the company behind the meat ingredient used in dog food brand The Pack’s Chick Bites. These slaughter-free, low-carbon treats are made with plant-based ingredients and are billed as a sustainable option.

Meatly is claiming a world first for retailing cultivated meat for pet food, according to The Guardian. The company received regulatory clearance for the use of cultivated meat in pet food last summer, marking a European first. Chick Bites are Meatly’s first commercialization of its cultivated meat, which is grown in bioreactors using cells from a single chicken egg.

Although this first dog treat is a “limited release,” indicating that production capacity is still limited, Meatly stated that its next steps will focus on scaling up production and making the products more widely available to consumers.
