For the second year in a row, Universal has chosen CinemaCon as the platform to unveil the first footage from its upcoming film, Wicked: For Good, the highly anticipated sequel to its adaptation of Wicked. The event featured director Jon M. Chu, producer Marc Platt, and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who were all present to showcase the first footage from the film. Although the footage is not yet available online, here’s a detailed description of what was presented.

The scene begins with the sound of glass shattering in a luxurious apartment in the Emerald City, where Glinda resides. She steps out onto her spacious balcony and calls out, “Elphaba Thropp, I know you’re out there, come in before the monkeys see you.” The camera pans around her twice before Elphaba suddenly appears.

Meanwhile, Elphaba has established a secluded home for herself in the woods, where she’s seen looking at propaganda spread about her. The monkeys are flying through Oz, and Glinda is crowned with a magnificent crown. Madame Morrible declares that the witch will soon be caught, now that Prince Fiyero and his squad are hot on her trail. The scene then cuts to Fiyero riding a horse through the woods, accompanied by his soldiers.

The sky is filled with the words “Our Wizard Lies” as people march through the streets of the Emerald City with torches. Glinda returns to the tower from the end of the first film and walks up the stairs. In a heartwarming moment, Glinda and Elphaba are seen sitting together on a swing, discussing the good they can do together.

A subsequent scene shows Glinda in a grand, church-like setting, wearing a stunning pink gown, followed by a shot of Fiyero standing on an altar, hinting at a possible wedding. The Wizard’s palace is then shown, filled with flashing colored lights, where it seems that Glinda, Elphaba, and the Wizard are dancing together. Someone is seen handling a few yellow bricks, adding to the intrigue.

The Wizard is shown with Dorothy, the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow in his palace, instructing them to “Bring me the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West.” In a follow-up scene, Fiyero points a gun at Elphaba, with the Wizard present, but then shifts his aim to the Wizard, indicating that he’s still loyal to Elphaba.

Elphaba shares a emotional moment with Glinda, saying, “You’re the only friend I ever had.” Glinda responds with a joke, “And I’ve had so many friends,” before the two hug and cry. As the footage concludes, Elphaba stands tall, summons her hat and broom, and declares, “I’m off to see the Wizard,” followed by scenes of her flying through Oz, pursued by the monkeys.

Although the trailer was filled with many captivating moments, the plot is not yet entirely clear. However, it certainly felt like a trailer that will be released to the public later this summer. Wicked: For Good is scheduled to hit theaters on November 21.
