Jon Bernthal’s return as the Punisher has been a major draw for Daredevil: Born Again, and the excitement has only intensified with the announcement of a spinoff series centered around the character. During an interview for The Accountant 2 at SXSW, Bernthal expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to tell a story that fans deserve, adding that the team is giving it their all to create a Frank Castle story that will resonate with audiences. He emphasized that the tone will be dark and unapologetic, promising that it won’t be a watered-down version of the character.

Bernthal has long been vocal about his affection for the Punisher, and his involvement in cowriting the special with Reinaldo Marcus Green adds significance to the project. The first season of Born Again introduces characters who idolize Frank, including police officers who embrace his violent approach. Showrunner Dario Scardapane has stated that this storyline has been “begging to be told” and will span the show’s two seasons. As the series progresses, Frank’s path will cross with these characters, setting the stage for his special to explore this thread further. It will be intriguing to see how this narrative connects to the second season of Born Again and whether this marks the beginning of a larger arc for the character.

The Punisher’s return has been a deliberate move, and it’s likely that this show and special are just the starting point for more storylines featuring Frank Castle. [via The Hollywood Reporter]
