According to a report by The Information, Meta is considering the launch of a standalone application dedicated to short-form videos. The information was revealed by an anonymous source who claims to have heard Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, discussing the project with staff members.
The alleged project, code-named “Project Ray,” aims to enhance recommendation features for both new and existing users in the United States. Additionally, it is expected to include more videos with a duration of up to three minutes, as stated by the source in the report.
Meta has not provided an immediate response to requests for comment on this matter.
Last month, the company introduced a video editing application called Edits, designed to compete with CapCut, a product owned by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. This move is seen as an attempt to capitalize on the uncertain future of TikTok and ByteDance in the United States.
Currently, the Instagram feed is a mix of photos, videos (Reels), and Stories. However, many users have expressed that the app has become cluttered due to its heavy focus on videos, deviating from its original purpose as a photo-sharing platform. By spinning Reels into a separate application for short-form videos, Instagram may be able to refocus on its other features.
Earlier this year, Instagram initiated a program to pay creators to promote the platform on other social media apps, including TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. Furthermore, it has been reported that the company is offering significant financial incentives to creators who post exclusive content on Reels.
