Recall Notice: Igloo Rolling Coolers
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of over 1 million Igloo rolling coolers due to safety concerns. According to a press release, the lids on the Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers have caused at least 12 fingertip amputations, bone fractures, and lacerations.
Affected Products
The Igloo coolers in question were sold from January 2019 through January 2025 and retailed for between $80 and $140. The recall includes approximately 23,000 coolers in Mexico and 47,000 coolers sold in Canada. Although the Canada Consumer Product Safety Agency reports no injuries in Canada, the recall is still in effect.
Identifying Affected Coolers
The recall involves all 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers made before January 2024. To identify affected coolers, consumers can check the bottom of the cooler for a circular pattern containing the manufacturing date. An arrow points to the month of creation, and the last two digits of the year are inside the circle.
Cause of the Recall
The recall was initiated due to the tow handle’s ability to pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, posing fingertip amputation and crushing hazards. The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using the recalled coolers and contact Igloo for a free replacement handle.
Availability and Retailers
The coolers were sold at various physical retail stores nationwide, including Costco, Target, Academy, and Dick’s, as well as online retailers such as Amazon.com and Igloocoolers.com.
Impact of the Recall
The recall highlights the importance of regulatory agencies like the CPSC in ensuring consumer safety. However, with recent changes in the administration, there is concern that such agencies may face cuts or dismantling, potentially putting public health at risk.
Conclusion
The recall of Igloo rolling coolers serves as a reminder of the importance of regulatory agencies in protecting consumer safety. As the landscape of public health and safety continues to evolve, it is crucial to remain vigilant and ensure that such agencies continue to function effectively. The CPSC’s efforts to alert consumers to potential hazards, such as the Igloo cooler recall, demonstrate the significance of their role in maintaining public safety.
