Fathom Entertainment Brings Horror Comedy Ick to Theaters
Frequent cinema-goers are likely familiar with Fathom Entertainment, the company responsible for bringing back beloved films to the big screen, such as classic fan favorites, including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which is set to return to theaters later this month. In addition to nostalgic releases, Fathom Entertainment also showcases new films, including a recent festival standout that may have otherwise flown under the radar. The horror comedy, titled Ick, received positive reviews at both the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and the 2024 Fantastic Fest, where io9 had the chance to see and enjoy it.
Ick is directed by Joseph Kahn, a filmmaker known for his extensive experience in creating stylish music videos, as well as his previous feature films, Torque and Bodied. Fittingly, one of the standout aspects of Ick is its soundtrack, which features a plethora of pop-punk sing-alongs from early 2000s bands, including Blink-182 and Paramore. This nostalgic element is particularly important for the main character, played by Brandon Routh, a high school teacher who still yearns for his glory days on the football field.
As a horror movie, Ick naturally features a sinister element: a mysterious and deadly substance that seems to be growing in power, threatening the town where the high school is located.

The cast of Ick also includes Mena Suvari as the Routh character’s former flame and Malina Weissman as her teenage daughter.
Although Ick is only receiving a limited three-day release, the fact that it is getting a theatrical run at all is encouraging news for smaller, non-franchise horror films. Hopefully, this marks the beginning of a trend that will provide more opportunities for future cult classics to reach a wider audience.
Ick will be shown in theaters in New York and Los Angeles starting July 24, followed by a nationwide engagement from July 27-29. You can sign up to receive notifications when tickets go on sale on Fathom Entertainment’s website.
