The time for action has finally arrived for the rebels of Gilead, and the narrative urgency that has driven The Handmaid’s Tale forward is now a promise of culmination as the series enters its sixth and final season. The newly released trailer for the adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s work offers renewed hope that Elisabeth Moss’ character June will ultimately see the downfall of the oppressive regime that has made life unbearable for countless individuals, including herself. Given all she has endured, it’s a testament to her strength that she has survived this long.
June’s key allies, including Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley), will be joining her in the fight against Gilead. The trailer also hints at a compelling storyline for the complex character Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski), as well as another powerful performance from Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia.
The official synopsis for the final season reads: “As The Handmaid’s Tale concludes, June’s unwavering spirit and determination propel her back into the heart of the resistance against Gilead. Luke and Moira are by her side, while Serena embarks on a path to reform Gilead. Meanwhile, Commander Lawrence and Aunt Lydia must confront the consequences of their actions, and Nick faces trials that will test his character. This final chapter of June’s story underscores the significance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom.”
The cast also includes Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, Sam Jaeger, Ever Carradine, and Josh Charles. The first three episodes of the sixth season will be available on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ starting April 8, with subsequent episodes rolling out weekly until the series finale on May 27. A sequel series, The Testaments, is currently in production at Hulu, although a release date has not been announced.
