As part of this agreement, news content from The Guardian will be integrated into ChatGPT as a trusted news source, featuring article excerpts and concise summaries. In return, OpenAI will grant the Guardian Media Group access to its ChatGPT Enterprise platform, which the company plans to utilize to develop innovative products, features, and tools.
According to Keith Underwood, chief financial and operating officer of the Guardian Media Group, “This partnership with OpenAI acknowledges the value and intellectual property rights associated with our award-winning journalism, enabling us to expand our reach and impact to new audiences and cutting-edge platform services.”
The Guardian Media Group has joined a growing list of prominent news publishers that have partnered with OpenAI, following an initial period of uncertainty surrounding the company’s business model. This trend, which began with The Associated Press in 2023, has gained momentum, with many leading English-language publishers now collaborating with the AI startup.
In some respects, The Guardian has been at the forefront of this trend. In 2023, the newspaper published an article outlining its approach to generative AI. A year later, it announced a partnership with ProRata, a company that developed a platform enabling AI platforms to attribute search results and share revenue with content owners. The latest announcement follows a lawsuit filed by a coalition of major publishers, including The Guardian, against Cohere, a Canadian startup accused of improperly using over 4,000 copyrighted works to train its AI models.
