Google has revealed its decision to discontinue the release of new Nest Thermostats in Europe, citing the “unique” requirements of the region’s heating systems as a major obstacle. Notably, the company had recently launched its redesigned fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat in 2024.

According to Google, “Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes.” As a result, the company has made the decision to “no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe” moving forward. However, it’s worth noting that the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E will continue to function, receive security updates, and be sold while supplies last. For those seeking a new thermostat compatible with Google Home, third-party options will be the way to go.

In addition to this change, Google has also announced the end of software support for several older Nest devices. Specifically, the first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats, as well as the second generation model released in Europe, will no longer receive software updates or connect to the Google Home app starting October 25, 2025. Although Google assures that any programmed routines will still work and manual temperature adjustments will be possible, these devices will essentially become less “smart” after the specified date.

In an effort to mitigate the impact, Google is offering discounts to affected customers: $130 off a new fourth-generation Nest Thermostat for US customers, $160 off for Canadian customers, and 50 percent off a Tado Smart Thermostat X for European customers.

The decision to discontinue support for these models, all of which are over a decade old, may seem reasonable on one hand. On the other hand, it raises concerns about Google’s long-term commitment to its Nest products, as most consumers do not anticipate their thermostats to have an expiration date. While the new Nest Thermostat is a notable release, the lack of indication for new Nest Hub or Nest Audio models, beyond plans to incorporate Gemini, leaves the future of these products uncertain.
