Google has officially introduced the Pixel 9a smartphone, a new mid-range device priced at $499. The most notable change in the A-series smartphone is its design, as the latest model no longer features a camera bar on the back.

The smartphone has received a processor upgrade, with the new model featuring Google’s Tensor G4 processor, compared to the G3 chip in its predecessor. The 9a promises a battery life of over 30 hours, comes with 8GB of RAM, and is available with either 128GB or 256GB of storage.

The Pixel 9a will be available for purchase starting in April and comes in four different color options: Peony, Iris, Porcelain, and Obsidian.

Additionally, the smartphone boasts an upgraded 6.3-inch Actua display, which Google claims is the brightest display ever seen on an A-series device. In comparison, the new display is 35% brighter than the Pixel 8a, with a peak brightness of 2700 nits. The 9a also features a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, providing a smoother user experience.

The smartphone’s dual rear camera system has been upgraded to include a 13MP ultrawide camera and a 48MP main camera. It also features Macro Focus, a first for an A-series device, allowing for detailed close-up shots.

The 9a is equipped with AI-powered photography features, including Add Me, Best Take, Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Audio Magic Eraser, Night Sight, Astrophotography, and the new Panorama with Night Sight.

Google notes that the 9a is the company’s most durable A-series phone to date, with improved IP68 water and dust resistance, enabling it to withstand spills, drops, and other forms of damage.

This announcement comes just a few weeks after Apple launched its new $599 iPhone 16e.
