Introduction to Google Photos Alternatives

Google Photos is an excellent service for storing images across devices. However, Google Drive and Gmail only provide 15GB of storage for free. Google Photos previously offered free unlimited storage of images, but this is no longer the case.

If you’re looking for a better photo storage plan, different features, or want to move away from Google’s ecosystem, there are several alternatives available.

Flickr

Free storage: 1,000 photos
Flickr takes a unique approach by allowing users to store 1,000 images and videos for free, with a maximum file size of 200MB. In contrast, Google Photos has a 75MB limit on its free plan. Flickr’s paid plans start at $10.44 per month for unlimited storage. Additionally, Flickr offers features that go beyond personal use, such as making photos public and joining groups based on different topics.

Dropbox

Free storage: 5GB
Dropbox is not primarily a photo storage service, but it can be an advantage if you want to store files beyond photos in the cloud. The company offers paid plans starting at $9.99 per month for 2TB of storage, similar to Google One’s premium plan.

Ente

Free storage: 5GB
Ente was created by a former Google engineer as a more private alternative to Google Photos. The service uses end-to-end encryption to protect photos and is available across platforms. Features include identifying and annotating people, showing photos from different locations, and creating categories. Ente’s monthly plans start at $2.49 per month for 50GB of storage, which can be shared with five other people.

Cryptee

Free storage: 100MB
Cryptee is another photo-storing service that prioritizes privacy and is open-source. While the free tier offers limited storage, the paid tier starts at $3.30 per month for 10GB of storage. Cryptee also features a built-in document editor and uses AES256 encryption to protect media.

Amazon Photos

Free storage: 5GB with Prime membership
Amazon Photos is a great perk for Amazon Prime members, offering 5GB of free storage. If you need more storage, plans start at $1.99 per month for 100GB.

500px

Free storage: 21 high-resolution photos per week uploads
500px is geared towards hobbyists or professional photographers, offering community features and a way to showcase snaps in an uncompressed format. Plans cost less than $50 per year, with a discount for unlimited high-resolution photo storage. The premium plans remove ads and offer insights into photo performance.

Photobucket

Free storage: No free storage
While Photobucket offers no free tier, it provides one of the lowest storage rates, with $5 per month for 1TB of storage. The service also offers group bucket plans at $8 per month for 1TB storage, including access to editing tools.
