Google has decided to remove its AI assistant, Gemini, from the main Google app on iOS devices. This move is intended to encourage users to download the standalone Gemini app, which would enable Google to compete more directly with other AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. However, this change may also lead to a reduction in Gemini’s user base, as many users may not be inclined to download a new app, especially when they already have the main Google app installed on their devices.

Google notified its customers of this change via an email, stating that “Gemini is no longer available in the Google app.”

The email instructed users who wish to continue using Gemini on their iOS devices to download the Gemini app from the App Store. Although the Gemini app was launched for iOS users worldwide late last year, it was still accessible within the main Google app until now.

The Gemini app for iOS offers a range of features, including voice conversations with the AI assistant through Gemini Live, integration with Google apps like Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail, and the ability to ask questions, plan trips, and create images. Users can interact with Gemini using text, voice, or the camera.

The email also cautions users that Gemini may make mistakes, advising them to double-check the AI’s responses.

Users who want to upgrade to the paid subscription, Gemini Advanced, can do so through the iOS app, where the Google One AI Premium plan is available as an in-app purchase.

If an iOS user attempts to access Gemini through the main Google app, they will see a full-screen message stating “Gemini now has its own app” with a link to download the app from the App Store.

Google’s decision to remove Gemini from the main app and encourage users to download the standalone app is a strategic move. While it may facilitate faster rollout of new AI features, it also risks a potential decline in Gemini usage, as some users may not make the switch to the new app.
