Google’s Smart Home Lineup Revamp

Google is overhauling its smart home product lineup, discontinuing production of two devices to focus on collaborations with third-party manufacturers. The first device to be discontinued is the Nest Protect smoke and CO alarm. Although production will cease, existing products will continue to function and receive security updates until they expire. Additionally, these devices will remain available for purchase until current stocks are depleted.

Partnership Approach for Smoke Alarms

Google is adopting a partnership approach for smoke alarms, teaming up with First Alert to introduce a new smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. This forthcoming device will integrate seamlessly with existing Nest Protect devices and can be controlled conveniently through the Google Home app. While First Alert has not announced an exact release date, the new alarm is expected to launch soon in the US and Canada, priced at $130. It will be available for purchase through both Google and First Alert’s online stores, as well as in retail stores and through professional distribution partners.

Locks: Google Partners with Yale

On the smart lock front, Google is once again partnering with Yale. The two companies are developing the Yale Smart Lock with Matter, designed to work harmoniously with the Google Home ecosystem, similar to the Nest-branded lock. As indicated by its name, this smart lock will be compatible with devices utilizing the Matter smart home protocol. Yale has stated that the lock’s battery life will last up to a year. The Yale Smart Lock with Matter is scheduled for release later this summer, priced at $170, and will be available in a range of finishes.
