Introduction to Android XR Glasses

Google has revisited its past endeavors and unveiled its newest iteration of smart glasses at the I/O 2025 conference. The introduction of Android XR glasses marks a significant collaboration between Google and Samsung, incorporating Gemini AI into these innovative devices. These smart glasses are designed to sync with smartphones, enabling access to various apps, and come equipped with speakers and an optional in-lens display for private information viewing.

Design and Partnerships

Unlike the less stylish predecessors, such as the old Google Glass frames, this version prioritizes real-world wearability and style. Google has partnered with renowned brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to provide frames for these smart glasses. The tech giant’s commitment to this project is underscored by its investment of up to a certain amount as part of the Warby Parker deal, with half allocated to product development and the remainder potentially invested in Warby Parker as equity.

Live Demonstration

The highlight of the I/O presentation was a live translation demo, where Shahram Izadi and Nishtha Bhatia conversed in Farsi and Hindi, respectively, while wearing the XR frames, which provided real-time English translations. Although the demo was briefly marred by AI glitches, there was a moment where the glasses functioned as intended.

Gemini Assistant Capabilities

In addition to the translation demo, Bhatia showcased the capabilities of the Gemini assistant integrated with the XR glasses. She asked the assistant questions about images she saw backstage and retrieved information about a cafe where she had coffee before the show, demonstrating the potential of this technology.
