Recently, OpenAI announced that it would be adopting a standard from its competitor, Anthropic, for linking AI models to the systems that store data. Now, Google is also adopting this standard.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, revealed that Google will be integrating support for Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) into its Gemini models and software development kit (SDK). Although no specific timeline was provided.

According to Hassabis, “MCP is a reliable protocol that is quickly gaining acceptance as an open standard for the AI-driven era.” He also expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with the MCP team and other industry players to further develop the protocol.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) allows AI models to access data from various sources, including business applications, software, and content repositories, in order to perform tasks. It also enables the creation of two-way connections between data sources and AI-powered applications, such as chatbots.

By utilizing “MCP servers”, developers can make their data accessible, and then create “MCP clients”, such as apps and workflows, that can connect to these servers as needed. Since Anthropic open-sourced MCP, several companies, including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, have added support for the protocol to their platforms over the past few months.
