Google has released the pricing details for its latest AI reasoning model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, which boasts top-notch performance in various coding, reasoning, and math benchmarks.

The pricing for Gemini 2.5 Pro is tiered, with prompts up to 200,000 tokens costing $1.25 per million input tokens (approximately 750,000 words, longer than the entirety of the “Lord of The Rings” series) and $10 per million output tokens. For prompts exceeding 200,000 tokens, a threshold that surpasses the capabilities of most competing models, the cost increases to $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.

This pricing structure makes Gemini 2.5 Pro the most expensive AI model currently offered by Google, surpassing even the costs of its predecessor, Gemini 2.0 Flash, which is priced at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.40 per million output tokens. Additionally, Gemini 2.5 Pro is pricier than other cutting-edge models, including OpenAI’s o3-mini ($1.10 per million input tokens, $4.40 per million output tokens) and DeepSeek’s R1 ($0.55 per million input tokens, $2.19 per million output tokens).

However, it’s worth noting that Gemini 2.5 Pro, which is available for free with stringent rate limits, is more affordable than some other high-end models, such as Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet ($3 per million input tokens, $15 per million output tokens) and OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 ($75 per million input tokens, $150 per million output tokens). The initial reaction from the tech industry has been largely favorable, with developers praising the model’s pricing as reasonable.

That being said, there appears to be an upward trend in pricing for flagship AI models. The costs of recent top-of-the-line releases from prominent labs like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic have been increasing. For instance, OpenAI’s newly launched o1-pro is the company’s most expensive API offering to date, priced at $150 per million input tokens and $600 per million output tokens.

This trend may be driven by high demand and rising computing costs. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Gemini 2.5 Pro is the most in-demand AI model among developers, resulting in an 80% increase in usage on Google’s AI Studio platform and the Gemini API this month alone.
