Fullmetal Alchemist to be Re-Released on WebToon

If you’ve recently found yourself pondering Fullmetal Alchemist and are considering re-reading it, WebToon has got you covered.

The revamped version of Hiromu Arakawa’s shonen classic is set to arrive on the digital comics platform, featuring full-color illustrations and a format optimized for vertical scrolling. This aims to enhance accessibility and broaden its audience, joining notable IPs like DC Comics and Dropout’s Dimension 20, which have also come to WebToon in recent years. According to Yongsoo Kim, WebToon’s global head, Fullmetal Alchemist is “the kind of story that stays with you for life. By bringing this iconic series to audiences, we’re providing both longtime fans and newcomers with a fresh way to experience this story. The full-color, reformatted digital reading experience will make this iconic tale more accessible and immersive than ever.”

Fullmetal Alchemist is no stranger to re-releases, having undergone republished editions in recent years. It was also retold as a more faithful anime in 2009’s Brotherhood and had its saga covered across a live-action film trilogy released in 2017 and 2022. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the conclusion of both the original manga (on June 11, 2010) and Brotherhood (July 4, 2010), making the WebToon version’s release timely.

For those interested in checking it out, Fullmetal Alchemist will debut on WebToon starting Tuesday, May 7. If you’re eager for more of Arakawa’s work, she’s currently writing and illustrating the manga Daemons of the Shadow Realm and did character design for Netflix’s Moonrise anime.
