I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that when I first watched Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday, we were both teenagers – and now, with Freakier Friday on the horizon, we’re both mothers. It’s truly unbelievable! Watching the new Freakier Friday trailer left me reeling, as the reality of “this is really happening” hit me like a ton of bricks. Lindsay Lohan’s character, Anna, is now a successful musician, and Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Tess, Anna’s therapist mom, in the sequel to a film that holds a special place in my heart, one that I share with my own mother.

I used to belt out the songs by Pink Slip, Anna’s band, and upon rewatching the film recently, I was surprised to find that I still remember all the lyrics to “Take Me Away.” Seeing that the sequel’s body-swapping chaos unfolds at the band’s party – I immediately recognized the logo – only adds to my excitement to see how the story unfolds.

This time around, the “freakier” aspect of Freaky Friday is that there are four characters involved: Anna and Tess, as well as Anna’s teenage daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter, all switch bodies. The mother-daughter lesson from the first film is passed down to Anna and her teen, making me feel like time is flying by. It’s also a bit odd that Tess and the stepdaughter swap bodies, but I hope they pull it off convincingly, given that she’s a bit of an outsider. It makes sense that Anna and her daughter would switch, considering Anna was a rebellious teenager in the first film, according to Tess, who just didn’t understand her. This trope is timeless, and it’s something many of us can relate to. I still recall having the same Hot Topic fishnet sleeves, made from cut-up leggings, which I’d wear under a tee with a studded belt and loop bracelets, just like Lohan wore in the first movie. It’s astonishing to think that you can walk into a Hot Topic today and find all those same items, as fashion has come full circle.

I hope we get to see Anna’s daughter mirror her mom’s teenage years, but it’s uncertain based on the trailer. While we don’t get much of the mother-daughter dynamic, it will be fascinating to see how their relationships evolve in this quadruple Freaky Friday scenario. The trailer opens with Anna and Tess being warned that their lifelines have intersected and that they may have to relearn the lesson from the first film. In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, the fortune cookie-giving mother from the Chinese restaurant in the first film appears next to the DJ, who could be her granddaughter, making us wonder if she’s behind the mystical mayhem once again. Having experienced generational lessons with my own mom, who loves to meddle in the lives of those she cares about, I’m excited to watch this with her.

While the trailer has a more nostalgic tone, reintroducing familiar characters like the band, the mean professor, and Jake from high school (played by Chad Michael Murray, reprising his role), there’s not much known about the story. It’s also unclear if Jake is the father of Anna’s teenager, but we do know that Manny Jacinto is part of the cast and is rumored to play Anna’s current love interest. And, as a bonus, we get a glimpse of his impressive biceps, which makes this movie feel even more targeted towards millennial moms like myself. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I’m now a mom – I used to chase my annoying little brother out of the room when I’d pretend to be in Pink Slip, and now he’s an uncle who towers over me. It’s indeed a freaky feeling.

Freakier Friday hits theaters on August 8, and Freaky Friday is currently streaming on Disney+.
