Jon Favreau is often closely associated with the Star Wars franchise, having created the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian and upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, his connection to Disney extends far beyond the galaxy far, far away. With a history of directing and co-starring in various Marvel movies, as well as helming the 2019 blockbuster The Lion King, it’s no surprise that he has another Disney project in the works. This time, though, the subject matter is somewhat unexpected: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

According to Deadline, Favreau will be utilizing his expertise in both live-action and photorealistic animation to bring this prospective Disney+ series to life, which will blend both styles. He will also be writing and producing the show. For those unfamiliar with Oswald, he bears a resemblance to Mickey Mouse, but with bunny ears and a tail. This similarity is rooted in the character’s history, as Deadline explains: Oswald was created by Walt Disney in 1927 and featured in 27 animated shorts before Universal gained control of the character in 1928, prompting Disney to create Mickey Mouse as a replacement.

In 2022, a vintage-style Oswald short was released to commemorate Disney’s 100th anniversary, marking the first hand-drawn Oswald short in nearly 95 years. Deadline notes that Oswald’s resurgence has been in the works for some time, with Disney CEO Bob Iger prioritizing the character’s comeback. The Walt Disney Co. reacquired the Oswald trademark in 2006.

With Favreau on board, it seems like Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is poised to experience a stroke of good fortune. What are your thoughts on Favreau’s latest venture into Disney+ series beyond the Star Wars universe?
