A visit to Epic Universe’s Dark Universe offers glimpses into a mysterious narrative that encourages repeat visits to uncover more. In Darkmoor Village, where humans and monsters coexist precariously, the complex relationship between the villagers, the mad scientist in her castle, and the vampires below creates a delicate balance of the macabre.

During io9’s visit to Darkmoor during Epic Universe’s opening week, the dense canon introduced raised questions about its connection to Universal’s abandoned Dark Universe film franchise. It appears that elements within the attractions, land details, and immersive interactions echo the plans for an Avengers-like assembly of Universal Monsters on the big screen.

Upon entering Darkmoor, a massive crypt with sounds of Victoria Frankenstein’s assistant Ygor and the land’s version of Frankenstein’s Monster sets the tone for the story. The village square features a well that glows blood red at night, symbolizing the vampires’ dominance and the pact between the living and the dead.

The ride Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment reveals the original Dr. Frankenstein’s role in maintaining peace and his granddaughter’s efforts to continue this legacy. Victoria Frankenstein’s goal is to dominate the monsters, with Dracula being the last one to be controlled.

When the Dark Universe films were still in development, director Alex Kurtzman discussed the framework for the series, including an organization that catalogs and follows supernatural entities. This concept is reflected in the theme park, albeit minimally, through Dr. Jekyll’s interactive moment at his apothecary window.

The merchandising and ride queue for Monsters Unchained feature Victoria cataloging, following, and collecting monsters, mirroring the cinematic plans. The concept of monsters being more heroic than others and aligning with the side that will have the lowest body count is also present.

In 2016, Kurtzman discussed the idea of bringing the monsters together, stating that it wouldn’t be a pretty or predictable experience. This is reflected in the ride, where Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and Dracula interact in a chaotic manner.

Restaurant Lore

Kurtzman previously mentioned that the monsters would need a unifying reason to come together. In the theme park canon, Dracula is the central figure, and his desire for control drives the conflict. The Das Stakehaus restaurant features former vampire leaders staked and on display, symbolizing Dracula’s disapproval of their coexistence with the Frankenstein family.

The interactive characters at the Burning Blade Tavern share more lore, including the reason behind Dracula’s bare feet and ugly toenails on the ride. The hunter characters also mention the monsters they’re hunting, potentially hinting at future Dark Universe expansions.

Dark Universe is now open at Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida.
