Seattle, day two, and the situation is about to take a drastic turn for the worse. The fifth episode of The Last of Us season two continues Ellie and Dina’s perilous journey through Seattle as they search for Abby, the woman responsible for Joel’s death. They finally have a lead, as one of Abby’s friends is being treated in a nearby hospital. However, they must navigate a city torn apart by a fierce war between the WLF, a major military presence, and the Serephites, also known as the Scars, a dangerous religious group.
The episode begins with the WLF, where Hanrahan commends Sgt. Park for her heroic actions in containing the Cordyceps outbreak in the hospital basement. However, this comes at a great personal cost, as Sgt. Park’s son, Leon, sacrificed himself to prevent the spread of the infection. This tragic event humanizes the WLF, highlighting the difficult decisions they must make in their fight against the Scars.
Meanwhile, Ellie and Dina use the WLF’s unencrypted radio communications to plan their route through the city. Dina shares her backstory, revealing that she was forced to kill a raider who murdered her mother and sister when she was a child. This traumatic experience has driven her desire for vengeance and informs her relationship with Ellie, who is also seeking revenge for Joel’s death.

As Ellie and Dina navigate the city, they encounter a group of infected, including the intelligent and deadly “smart infected.” They are rescued by Jesse, who helps them escape from the WLF. The trio finds themselves in a park controlled by the Scars, where they witness the brutal execution of a WLF soldier. Ellie decides to continue her search for Nora, one of Abby’s friends, and finds her in the hospital.

Nora reveals that she is infected and taunts Ellie, saying that they are both doomed. However, Ellie’s response suggests that she is immune to the Cordyceps infection. In a shocking twist, Nora reveals that Joel killed everyone at the hospital where a potential cure was being developed, including Abby’s father. Ellie’s reaction implies that she was already aware of Joel’s actions, and her desire for revenge is driven by a complex mix of emotions.

The episode ends with Ellie torturing Nora, determined to find Abby’s location. However, this scene is intercut with a flashback of Ellie in bed, waking up to find Joel by her side. This suggests that Ellie’s actions are a manifestation of her darkest impulses, and the true extent of her knowledge and motivations remains unclear.

While the episode’s repetitive structure and pacing may be a drawback, the shocking revelation at the end makes up for it. Ellie’s confrontation with Nora is a pivotal moment in the series, and her actions raise questions about her character and the true nature of her quest for revenge.
